  • Abstract::
    This study investigates an effect of gain and background noise on the human perception of reverberation and refines the reverberation time by using a previously developed loudness model (Dynamic Loudness Model by Chalupper and Fastl). Subjective experiments conducted with three different types of source signals: (1) an anechoic music sample convolved with RIRs, (2) an anechoic opera singing convolved with the same RIRs and (3) the RIRs without convolution. The hypotheses are that the gain has positive effect and background noise has a negative effect on the human perception of reverberation. With respect to the refined reverberation time, it is compared with the conventional reverberation time and the conventional early decay time derived from the experiment results. The results of this study support the hypotheses and it shows that the refined reverberation time outperforms the conventional parameters as a predictor of the reverberance.
