  • Synopsis:
Designers use line sketches to quickly express their ideas. It would be very useful to be able to recover these sketches as 3D objects, and improve design throughput. This talk presents the work we have done in this area, focusing on two specific aspects: the identification of the faces of the object in a line drawing and the recovery of its 3D geometry from the drawing.
Humans can identify the object faces at a glance, but this task is difficult for a computer. This talk will describe a graph-based method that can do it efficiently. For 3D recovery, most researchers use an iterative optimisation-based method, exploiting certain geometric regularities in the drawing. In this talk, we will look at a deterministic method based on cubic corners.
  • Brief Bio:
YT Lee is an associate professor at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He obtained his BSc and PhD degrees from the University of Leeds and his MSc degree from the University of Rochester. He worked as a software engineer in England developing CAD systems before joining NTU in 1991. His technical expertise are in the areas of geometric modelling and computer graphics, CAD, CAM and CAE. His recent research focuses are in the recovery of 3D objects from 2D line drawings and the simulation of articulated vehicle behaviours. He was the Chairman of the inaugural SIGGRAPH Asia conference in 2008 and is currently the Chairman of the SIGGRAPH Asia Conference Advisory Group.
